Have any of you guys ever caught one? I read that they are a hybrid of black and white crappie nad are being stocked in Tennessee and Arkansas. Do these hybridize naturally?
we have them in our lakes douglas ,cherokee and boone
probally others also i have caught them in all three of the ones mentioned
they say if a black nose spawns with another black nose they will keep the stripe if they cross they loose it. don't know for sure just what i have heard.
What is a blacknose crappie?
A blacknose crappie is just a black crappie with a wide, dominant black stripe running from the top fin to the tip of the nose. Untrained observers can easily recognize this stripe.
Is the blacknose crappie a different species or subspecies?
No. Scientists at Auburn University have determined that blacknose crappie are a genetic variation of black crappie and not a hybrid of white and black crappie or a subspecies.
I've heard that some states stock them in order to check their growth rates so they know the difference between them and native fish.
No, It's one that I caught and used my felt pen to put that mark on so I'd know if I caught it again... Been doing if for years now, see you caught one of my fish.

on the site's Search link .... put "Blacknose" in as the search word ... and set it to search "all" forums. You'll see that this fish has been widely disussed, over the life of this site ... and most everyone that's caught one, wants to catch another :D (especially if it was a good'un)Quote:

Some "experts" have even said that they don't hit or fight any harder than a "regular" Black Crappie. I don't know how many "THEY'VE" caught, or who they talked to and got that information from ... but, the one's I've caught --- wasn't much guesswork for me to figure out I had a Blacknose on :p ... since they pull harder, go ever whichaway in a big hurry, and even jump clear out of the water  on occasion. Ain't been no "regular" Black OR White Crappie that's done that to me ... only the Blacknose !! (if you happen upon a certain one of my posts, about Blacknose Crappie, you'll get to read about the one that jumped clear over the front of the boat ;) )
