Cane Creek Action
Squeezed in some time on the water today. I got to meet up with Jerry and Robert out there. Also got to meet JLeus this morning. There was quite a few folks out there today.
I put in at 5:30. Caught two nice ones and lost a couple of good 'uns before sunrise. Found lots of dinks too. The crappie out there will definately bite well before sunrise, so be sure to get there early, and don't forget the Q-beam or be prepared to ride the stumps...:D
Things slowed down after sunrise. Picked up a dozen or so 7" dinks. Didn't start catching them again until about 8:30. I found mostly dinks around the treeline with a few keepers in there. For me, the better quality fish came from about 100yds inside of the treeline, in the same spots I was catching 'em this time last year. I had my limit before 11am, but the fish were still biting pretty good as I was packin' it in. Big fish of the day was 2lb 7oz white crappie, but most of the keepers were around the pound and a half mark. Lots of good quality fish. Biggest 7 were all over 14" and weighed 13lb 9oz.
I caught dinks from 2-5' deep, but the keepers were all hanging around 6-7' deep. Rosies did the trick today. Water temp was in the upper 50's. Grass has thinned out enough to fish. Just have to find the little pockets of grass to find the fish.
Also, how many folks would be intrested in a mini get-together out at CC? Now is the time to be out there. Hopefully the pics posted by Jerry and I will give y'all the shakes. Here's some more fuel for the fire...

Great post Chris, that first sunrise pictures is calendar material, I need to try that through the trees, it's awesome. Man you have 2 white crappie, very unusual for Cane Creek. That's a nice limit of crappie, I might have done better if I hadn't been watching you haul them in. I'm going to have to get some coaching on your way of fishing so I can catch some when it gets to cold for them to chase the roadrunner. I told JLeus and CrappieKg about the fish and eat weekend and they were both interested, hopefully we can get some others to come. Hope you get back down soon.

Now that is what I am talking about man! WTG!!

You know, I didn't even notice that the other one was a white crappie as well. I'll have to start payin' closer attention to the numbers of each.
I guess they just weren't going to chase a bait today. I was moving pretty slow for 'em. And, I figured that you would have the Lucky technique down by now. The fish I caught before sunrise were caught on a slip bobber with a minnow.
And BW, that 3 or 4 pounder is out there waiting on you...

Nice catch there Chris, Jerry has been doing pretty good and I thought he had it all figured out, but he says otherwise... Put him in the boat with you and yall get 2 limits.....lol.......... Thanks for the post and the pics.

Great catch of some really nice hawgs. If I'm not working the weekend of the fish and eat, I'd love to come. Where exactly is Cane Creek in SE AR? I did a Google Maps search on it and got nothing. I'd like driving directions and the best route to take. Also Chris, if you're spider rigging in all that standing timber I should be able to get my boat in it, yes?

looking good there Ceb. some really nice looking crappie. WTG

Darryl,
I'll answer for chris, in case he doesn't get a chance to. You can get your boat in there, but it is real stumpy. lot's of standing timber & lily pads. you don't have to go real far either. that's why people like lucky can get out there in the winter time to fish in the plastic 2 man boats.
As far as directions, Cane Creek is right outside of star city. you go through town, (traveling south) turn left at the cane creek state park sign, & it's about 4-5 miles down. if you use google maps, you should be able to find it. I'm glad they are in there now. I will be hitting cane creek real soon. see everyone on the water!
by the way, great pics & fish chris... get back to work, & leave the fishing to us rookies. hah!

Hey Johnny, I guess everyone has their own technique and style. Casting that roadrunner is definately not my style. I end up just looking stupid trying to cast that dang RR. And I've been put to shame more than a few times by Jerry's ol' roadrunner.
And Darryl, you wouldn't have any problems getting your boat in there. They have lots of bass tournaments and all of the big boats are usually there. You don't really have to worry about any stumps where we go (as long as you trail someone who has been there before). It's only about 1/2 mi at the most from the boat ramp. I spider-rig with only 4 poles at the most. Lots of times, about 3 is all I can manage between navigating the tight spots and getting hung-up religiously. The hovering technique should work well out there. Only thing that won't work is your vertical pole holders...you don't want any rods stickin' up in the air out there cuz there's lots of limbs.
And Randy, you're right about that...school is too much like work now.:D And just to be fair...I've been locked down the past couple of months, so you've had plenty of time to rub it in...;)

chris,
Timing is everything. plus it helps being good at crappie fishing, which I do NOT profess to be as good as you are. I have been having to work these past couple of months also, just not the same sort of hours that you do in school. If you remember, you beat me 15-1 last year on CC. I'm trying to get all my equipment problems taken care of before I come down this year; low vis line, heavy weights for hovering, good pole holders for spider rigging, etc. I want to get hold of a couple of those slabs you & jerry took pics of this weekend. problem is, i'll have to get up reaaal early to be launched by 530 am. don't know if I can get up that early. any possibility of an afternoon bite out there? do they do better in the morning? just lookin' at all my options. randy out.
