According to the KDFWR 2007 Rules/Regs ... there's no size limit on Crappie, at Lake Malone. There is a slot limit for Bass (12-15" Bass must be released), and a 12" minimum size limit for Channel Catfish ... but, no mention of size limits on Crappie. KDFWR says the Crappie grow quick there ... but I haven't found any fishing reports for the lake, concerning Crappie.
Searching for fishing reports for Crappie, on Lake Malone, I found a lot of real estate ad photos of the lake. It looks to be fairly devoid of any standing timber, in the lake. This would make me believe that submerged wood (stumps, brush piles, etc) would be where the Crappie would most likely be found. It's not a big lake, only 800acres +/- ... so you should be able to cover a large portion of it, in a days fishing. There are Gizzard Shad & Brook Silverside minnows in the lake ... so regular minnows, jigs, Roadrunners, BeetleSpins, etc. should work for you. There are Black Crappie, and White Crappie ... so you should be able to fish deep or shallow for them - trolling in the 12-20ft depths, or casting to shoreline cover in the 6-12ft depth range. Tightlining minnows, or drifting/slow trolling with minnows would be another option ... depending on your ability to anchor over a spot, or the wind.

I've fished Malone a great deal in the past for bass before I transitioned to being a full time Crappie fanatic. It's a pretty little lake and the bass fishing can be pretty good. I've never wen't after the Crappie seriously on the lake. To be honest it's a good hour drive, and if I'm heading west to fish I go all out and hit the "big pond", Kentucky Lake. Most the Crappie that I've seen on Malone are small 9" and 10" are about average. I've caught more in the spring back in Shady Cliff area.
If I were closer to the lake, I would probably try sinking some cover to make me some good spots. I would think finding a good drop and sinking some form of cover on it would be real productive on Malone.
Sorry I couldn't help you out more.
Give me a few days to get settled in. I have been in Mississippi Crappie Camp. I will give you some info on Malone and take you fishin if you want to go. Crappie are very slow there right now so we have plenty of time.Quote:
