24 volt charging question

I need some help!

My new boat has a Minn Kota 24 volt trolling motor. I bought a 4 pin plug to wire to my 12 volt battery charger to the front of my boat thinking it would charge both batteries; not the case.

The batteries are wired together so I was only charging one battery. Needless to say I found out the hard way when the one battery was dead and the other one was full. Not a good combination for a 24 volt trolling motor.

Question: Do I need to buy a two bank chager to avoid this problem and any recommendations on chargers?

I have seen several ugly reviews about on board chargers going bad after a several month. Probably to much boucing around on the lakes.

I use a 3 bank, 5 amp on board XPS from Bass Pro. Its made by ProMariner and haven't had any problems with it. When I get home I plug it in and forget it until time to go again. It will recharge my batteries over night.

I've used a Guest 2 bank onboard charger (10 amps per bank) for 3 years without any trouble from the charger.

I'd get a 3 bank charger. One bank for each trolling battery and one to keep the cranking battery topped off.

I also use this charger, with no problems. I think you need a three bank for sure.

Dual Pro has done me good for 3 yrs and counting.

My boat had this same setup when I bought it. (I think. The 4 pin plug would plug in where the trolling motor would.) It would charge both of the batteries. You could have a bad battery or wiring problems. I have an onboard charger now. Get a multi-tester and see if the charger is charging both batteries by checking the batts while the charger is on.

3 bank charger for me no problems
