Downwind/CP Taylorsville hookup results ...

met up at the Settlers Trace gas station/store ... soon joined by Arca, and off we went. Downwind & I fished from about 7AM til Noon.
Arca got into some fish right off the bat, using minnows over downed trees at about 13ft deep. I took a fish off a blowdown on a point, where we started in at ... then we didn't catch another fish for some time. Arca picked up some more fish, over a brushpile close to where Downwind and I were fishing. We left that area and moved on ... Arca must have moved on, too, as we didn't see him after that. Downwind and I continued on to some other spots, not far from where we started. We picked up a couple more fish, and I lost one at the boat (wimpy hookset :D ... and my excuse is, bites were a very light tic, not even a "tap" or "thump" - and I've been off the water for months, so I was a bit rusty :D )
We didn't slay'em :p but had a good time "trying". Light wind (SSE) and flat water surface may have kept the fish deeper than we expected. Water temps ranged from 69-74deg ... main lake is clear to stained (normal green water color for T-ville) and there was some murky areas in the creeks. Water level is 1ft below Winter pool, but still not as low as I've seen it in the past ... just not this early in the year, though. Some rains and cooling temps will be a great benefit, and should get the Fall bite started.
All the Crappie we caught were White Crappie ... probably due to the water temps still being a bit high. Black Crappie should start coming into the banks, once the water temps drop another 8-10deg.

Enjoyed the time on the water ... good to meet the both of you guys ... and encourage you other Taylorsville anglers to hookup with either of these fine gentlemen, or each other, and give the lake a try.

Thanks for the report CP, glad ya'll had a good time. Wish you could have caught more fish. We fished again yesterday and got 11 keepers. They were smaller than last week but still had probably 7 over 10 inches. Had to keep moving and found fish 8 - 12 feet deep using minnows. There was no preference for cedar trees, may have actually caught more off the hardwoods. Hopefully the weather will cool and the fishing will heat up now that Fall is finally here.

Yeah, it was enjoyable just to be out of the house and on the water, again. I'm thinking that the depth (10-15ft range) is due to the water still being warm ... but, even so, they rarely seem to be less than 8ft deep (except some places during the spawn). I think the fish we caught all came off hardwood trees, too. We were casting jigs on the move, covering a lot of area. What I "can't" understand is why they aren't schooled up :confused: and you only seem to get one here and a couple there. Tain't natural for this time of year .... IS it ??
Can't figure out where all the dirty water in the creeks came from, either. Couldn't be wave action, since the main lake was pretty clear (no mud lines along the banks).
I think you can catch a nice mess of fish there ... if you just concentrated on blowdowns in 15 FOW or more. You might have to run hither and yon, to find blowdowns like that, but it would probably be worth the effort.

I guess minners are the way to go, right now. But, I've gotten into the habit of "live by the jig, die by the jig" :p and casting them ... probably a hold over from my Bass fishing days. Though, I never really took to jigs for Bass ... but, I did like "worm fishing" and throwing crankbaits ... and swimming a Crappie jig is a little like both of those ;)
