I have a 1994 Mercury Tracker 75 hp 3 cylinder and want to delete oil injection. I would like pros and cons on this. I have watched you tube videos and can do it. I know the pumps plastic gears fail. I am already mixing gas and oil because I was told I may never know when it might fail. I don't know if I am running to rich a mixture.
I can't help here, I've done VRO deletes and Yamaha Oil Injection deletes only.
Is the delete a good thing to do?
I was reluctant to do the delete on my 2000 200 Merc EFI, but when it would sit a while the oil would seep down, motor would smoke a lot at first start then the low oil alarm would go off, I would have to stop, remove the cowling and crack the lid on the on board reservoir in a few seconds it would fill and things worked fine until the boat sat a while. I got tired of that so deleted, not a big job on my motor. I now use quite a bit more oil and the motor smokes more at idle, but I do not have to pull the cowl on the lake so a trade off, and piece of mind that my 26 yr old motor will not oil fail.
It depends on the outboard. Older VRO or vacuum-based oil injection systems with carburetors and no electronic fuel injection systems can last longer by mixing with a known oil ratio in the gas and remembering to mix oil at every fuel up. It might not be so convenient since you have to know what fuel amount and confirm oil ratio, although I typically fill up with 5 gallon gas cans with oil beakers in my garage so that I can mix it properly. Newer 2-stroke EFI systems with oil injection might or might not like oil in the mix, although I haven’t researched it because my 41 year old Evinrude outboard had the VRO disconnected been mixing oil into the fuel for the last 20 years.Quote:

I killed my dad’s 90’s Mercury 40 with oil injection when a check valve went bad sometime during my college days. I was also younger and dumber back then, too.
