Spawn Already Winding Down?
I was finally able to get into my favorite area yesterday because of low water and was hoping to find a lot of fish shallow. I was pretty surprised to see that the water was already 66-67 degrees. I talked to another guy fishing the area who said they've been catching them really well in shallow water for at least two weeks and that he thought the spawn was already winding down. I attached a picture of a few I kept to clean, along with the color/style of Sid's Custom Jigs (out of Mississippi) that they smashed as soon as it hit the water at the base of the cypress trees. Wanted to share the picture to show how dark they were, so I'm guessing that they're all males who are still guarding the nest. I also missed several who took off with the jig immediately, but before I could set the hook, spit it out. I caught them all early before the heavy pre-front wind started, but once it got to 20-25 mph gusts, I had to shut it down and leave. Still a great day to get back in my favorite place in the basin.
