More winter pondering

We have all experienced how often crappie can change their preferred color. Sometimes hourly. I believe that the biggest factor in that is sun angle affecting light penetration. That factor is part of the concept of the Spike-It. I still have the original version called color-c-lector. I have not tried it on crappie, but the first half of my life was bass fishing including tournaments and I can tell you that its principle does work (sometimes).

So... how many of you use, or believe in, the possibility of this product being an asset in crappie fishing? :dono

I started with the Color-C-lector, back when it first came out ... and best I can remember I sold it. Then I purchased the Combo-C-lector and used it off and on for several years. I still have it, likely buried in the closet amongst a lot of other "seldom used" fishing related items. They both worked, but oddly enough they both told me to use the same color combination everytime I used them. :yikes Between that and seemingly taking away precious fishing time, I just kinda put it aside and forgot about it. Brought it back into use for a short while, several years ago, mostly to check water temps at various depths to find the thermocline. After figuring out that my electronics would show me the thermocline, back into the closet it went.

The whole concept of them was, as you stated, to show what colors were most visible at a certain depth, with water conditions in the "clear/stained/muddy" categories. The "Combo-C-lector" just added pH & temp readings to the color readings.

Spike-it took up the mantle, once the Lake Systems selectors were out of production ... at about 4 times the cost of the Lake Systems units. (mostly because it was "digital")

Would the Color-C-lector work on Crappie ... yeah, probably. But, be prepared to spend a bit of time away from fishing while using it. :twocents (NOTE: not all the Crappie are going to be at the same depth range at the same time, and the most visible colors will be different at various depths !! )

Let me share a planned test that my father and I conducted around 30-35 years ago. I am not trying to sell this product. It's just a fishing experience between fishermen.

We had a place that we knew well as far as depth, makeup, and the bass community. We estimated that the bass would be about 10-12 ft from the bluff, so that is where we took a color reading. We returned in 30 min to allow the spooked fish to return. Dad was in the front of the boat throwing a black texas rigged Zoom worm. The color was his best guess based on experience. I was in the back using the color-c-lector choice of red, also a texas rigged Zoom. After1 hour: 0 on black 7 on red.

A week later we conducted part 2 of our test in the same spot. This time was in reverse. We changed worm colors until we caught fish at a decent rate. The most productive was a color called electric blue. Next, we checked the area near where most of the fish hit our worms. Care to guess the color-c-lector choice? Blue was the choice for clear water. Violet was the choice for stained water. I don't know if this color is still on the market, but it was a combination of a purple body and heavy bright blue flecks. Coincidence? :confused:
