Time for a new cranking battery and was wondering if switching from regular batteries to lithium will work out okay? I like the idea of reducing weight and increased power from lithiums but are they worth the troubles that come with them? My engine is a 98 mercury 200 efi two stroke…any suggestions?
I have an AGM for my starter battery, despite my Evinrude XP150 being 50 years old--it's actually been fine. The best information that I can recall quickly is a thread on BBC about Mercury and lithiums: Just a moment.... This might be a good starting point for whether or not you are in the acceptable group, and which ones that you should consider if it is acceptable to use lithium in your case. A lithium dual purpose is probably ideal for most fishers for simplicity, although I do have my electronics on the lithium while the outboard, gauges, lights, and pumps are on the AGM deep cycle.
On my old boat I went with an all purpose lithium for starting and electronics after my group 31 lead acid battery would barely crank my (90 hp) outboard after six hours of fishing. It was a good move for me, I could fish all day and still have 13.1v in the battery, no more slow starts either.
I'd contact Mercury or my local dealer to check for compatibility. I run an all purpose lithium on my new to me boat that has a 24 250 Merc with no issues. One battery for starting, pumps, lights, etc, another one just for the electronics.
Watch out. The charging system on an outboard motor is made for a lead acid battery. I only use Lithium for my trolling motor.
That's why I suggested contacting Mercury, I did before installing one on my new to me boat. My old boat has an 02 Yamaha 90 on it and never had any issues.Quote:
