Has anyone tried to raise shiners at home? What would it take to get them to reproduce? What would the smallest tank that would work?

I don't know for sure but I think they have to be in a pond.
You can't raise shiners in your yard. Blunt but I hope it keeps you from a dark, frustrating road. In the live bait section I currently have a thread on ordering live minnows from andersonminnows.comQuote:

I added a few things that I encountered while trying to keep minnows years ago to Rojo's thread.
A neighbor moved out last week. Lots of metal for my scrap dealings. There were 4 dirty double aquarium filters in the pile. I left them for someone else.
If you use a 55 gallon plastic barrel cut the lid out, not off. Cutting the top off the barrel will let it form an ovel and will split with the weight of the water.

I went to Brown's hardware in Hernando for a new plastic hose bibb. None to be found. Replaced with brass and PVC for 3 times the price. Same at the home improvement centers. The PVC ones would need extra parts to work as mine is set up, driving the cost up. I checked at ebay and amazon finding them matching Brown's brass price for plastic ones with free shipping.
I used to keep leftovers in a half size chest freezer with aeration. Every third or fourth trip I’d accumulate enough to not buy for a trip. But had to change filters and dip several dead ones out often. Never even considered them reproducing

Chest freezers make good tanks. Some of these new freezers the thermostat won't allow you to keep the water above freezing much. That cold water keeps shiners a very long time but the transition in temperature needed to get a shiner up to 80 degrees take a little while.
I have an old farm style watering trough I bought at an auction for $20.
I use it with some bubble type aerators ONLY during the winter months. I buy 2-3 lbs of minnows at a time and bring back what I don’t use each trip. Yes some die but it is convenient for me and I don’t have to depend on an inconsistent bait shop.
