How far is your typical cast? With a slip bobber, a small split shot, 1/48 head and an itty bit plastic im getting about 40' on avg. Should I be happy with that? I'm always wanting to cast that "country mile" but not sure if that's obtainable.

40' is fine. The "country mile" can pass over some good fish, and unless you have a long rod, hooksets become problematic the farther you cast out.
I think my normal cast of a 1/16oz jig lands about 40' away, on a hard cast. That's with a 6.5' fast action rod & 6# Vicious copoly. But, since I'm not usually quite that far away from where I want my jig to land, the cast distance is likely more like 25' away on average.
(Note* ... I'm guessing on the 40' distance and would have to measure said cast to be accurate)
I'd say you're doing fine at 40' distance with your slipfloat rig.
Really depends if you can catch fish within 40’ but most importantly is accuracy if you know the target. You can improve your casting distance with lure weight, line and type of rod length and action. Instead of 1/48 head plus split shot, if you use just 1/32 or 1/16 head you might gain more distance.
My light 7’ can cast 2grams head with baby shad about 60’ as well as my Ultralight 7’3 cast 1 gram about the same distance. Luckily I have 3 target at 90’ 50’ and 30’.
i really did some not so accurate measurements (handle turn multiple by retrieving rate) this morning. Luckily I caught a couples well worth my time lol.
You can buy slip bobbers that have a weight attached at the bottom of the float. They are attached to the stem on the bottom. Get them at walleye world 3 for $2. A flip of a wrist they shoot 50 feet with no effort.
