Well, I was beginning to wonder was I going to have to post shorts, or empty ice chest. I was reaching out to those anglers that are able to fish daily and even a few guides I know.
For the last four or five trips not much luck. I usually sit on the sidelines from mid February to first of April. This has always been my least productive times on the southern river systems.
But today I brought me and my bride back about twelve and put the rest back. Probably caught at least a one man limit.
These fish were stacked up in a dead lake off the Pearl. This old lake is shallow ranging from a foot deep to only eight foot deep and some current is usually flowing through it till mid late summer when river gets really low. Yesterday the fish were only holding on big wood. No roamers to speak of. Most were found in three to eight foot of water holding from a foot deep to mainly three foot deep. Some were on the bottom but rarely bit. The ones holding higher up were more aggressive.
They wanted hair jig! No plastic!!! I spoke with four other fishermen none were having success with two that also had FFS. Those that I kept and cleaned had the pale eggs in them in which I have been told when pale no blood they are not going to lay them and their bodies simply ingest them. Not sure about that smarter anglers on this page may know more. The other interesting thing is all had three inch minnows and some even had a shad or two. But all other anglers in the lake were fishing mainly minnows under cork. A good day!

From the looks and sounds of it you had a very good time ... good pictures and post on your trip

Glad you had a good day. You caught them way, way north of where I fish in the Pearl. I catch 2-3 white crappie in my area a year, only blacks in my neck of the woods.

Beautiful fish! How satisfying is it to finally catch some after a couple of trips of frustration, huh?!? I think that’s what the best part of crappie fishing is…going through some struggles, and then finally having some success. Congratulations!

That’s the story of a good trip. Find em off by themselves and just have fun with em. Glad you had a good time and dinner too.

Just goes to show if you stay after them, you going to get them. Congrats on a good day, and a box of fine groceries...

Hope this additional post helps someone but had to add.
Again yesterday went to a totally different location. Actually a public lake near by for a few hours. Wind was awful, white capping! Wind is a real
Problem with a sixteen foot aluminum boat, no spot lock, as I call it “old school affordable fishing”.
So I stayed with the pattern BIG WOOD and sure enough they were on almost all on it.
Caught another limit maybe a two man limit. All fish were eleven to fifteen inch fish, no shorts. Not needing fish I kept sixteen or so for a sickly family member who can’t get out much came home cleaned and will deliver today nicely bagged up with ten fillets per bag.
Check the big wood, twelve to thirteen foot of water, some were in the hundreds and others two to five. Some were one to two foot deep others were eight foot deep. Rojo posted watching “Above the Fray” highly recommend as that played a big part yesterday even in that awful wind. Whites were mainly two’s to fives and blacks were in higher numbers. Due to boat slap had to put out four markers and just keep working the wood. Fished from ten till two as trolling motor battery got low because of having to run it on three to five just to hold the boat. Normally it’s on one and two at the most. Lake fishing ugg!
