Pulling or long lining jigs

I`ve always pulled tandem jigs using (2) 1/16th oz size tied with a standoff knot about 18 inches apart. The bodies I fish tend to be on the shallow side .

My only real complaints are:

1. Tandem jigs are more prone to hangups from wind issues, catfish, etc

2. I know crappie feed up and not down, so I sometimes wonder if Im pulling beneath some of the fish.


For those who pull jigs..

Is fishing a single jig just as good?
Wanted to experiment some... Should I try a single 1/16th, or would I be just as good to try a single 1/8 the size?

One 1/16oz jighead with a curly tail or boot tail body should ride higher in the water column (at the same speed when using a stinger tail body) due to the resistance factor of the tails. Also, a Road Runner or other underspin style jigs will ride higher, due to the resistance factor of the blade.

Your speed and length of line out will also dictate how deep your jigs will run.

I've never really Long Lined with multiple rods, opting to Long Line with single rod in hand. But, when multiple rods are a better option, I will be Pushing those jigs, and it'll be single jig rigs on each rod.

Then again, you "could" always go with a 1/32oz jig if a single 1/16oz is still too heavy for real shallow water, or if you have the need to lower your speed. Or you could possibly use a bobber of sufficient size to hold the weight of the jig(s) up, or for slower speeds.

Have you looked at the Precision Trolling app for your rig's depth profile for line, speed, and desired depth? If you need the depth and cut line distance, you could use a sinker where you put the 2nd jig to give the same weight without the hangups. I've also noticed that I sometimes put my crankbaits too deep when pulling and am working to adjust my habits to start shallower and start deeper instead of the other opposite direction.

Lakes I fish are shallow like 5’-8’ I do half 1/16 and 1/32 never tandem as I get enough tangles with single jigs and the Lord knows I already cuss too much while fishing.

I pull double jigs most of the time. Sometimes it’s double [emoji637]/[emoji639][emoji638], sometimes double [emoji637]/[emoji638][emoji640] and sometimes double [emoji637]/[emoji637][emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]]. If I need to go real shallow I’ll only use a single jig. I let water depth and fish depth tell me what I need to use.

I almost always run two jigs when trolling. I get some tangles throughout the season but not enough to consider running only one jig. The rods might be too close together?

How shallow are you dealing with?

For what it's worth, I usually use 1/32 oz for depths to about 12' and 1/16 oz for depths to about 18'. I fish from a rowboat and usually troll at around .7 to .8 mph. No set amount of line out, I just heave them out and get to moving. Single jig on each line and here in CT we can run 3 lines in most non-trout waters. I toss them out the back of the boat and lean them up against the back seat and just row around. And yes, I tangle them once in a while but.......
