I’ve seen videos where people say to use a limber rod, even noodly for float and jig fishing, but I don’t understand why. Is it to cast it easier? Or maybe to help keep the fish hooked on those tiny hooks? But since most crappie hooks are small anyway, if other baits like a Fin Spin work on a stiffer rod then why wouldn’t a jig with a similar sized hook?
The only reason I see a need for limber rod is to keep from ripping the fish lips on the hookset. I do a light hookset so it does not matter to me when I am crappie fishing. In fact I prefer a stiffer rod when fishing heavy brush so I can get the fish turned quickly after setting the hook.
I like a stiffer rod and I set the hook pretty good. Usually it’s in the hard part of their mouth and won’t come out easily. I actually think the softer noodle rods cause you to lose fish. :twocents
I use nothing but stiff rods. Doesn’t matter f I’m using a 1/4 oz or 1/80 oz. Jig and minnow or slip float or pitching jigs and tail.
I am a proponent of a medium UL rod with a fast tip because its the best of both world more or less. I use these types of rod whether I am jigging in boat docks or using a float and jig. I have never had any problems using this type of setup. But again that's me and my opinion tho.
Hmm. All votes for stiff rods. Seems it’s really just gonna be about personal preference and what works best for me. Thanks to all.
Personal preference, yup. I started with limber rods and still have them but much prefer stiffer. With time you’ll find what you like and prefer for the way you fish.
I had my float and jig rigged up on a 7' 6" walleye rod, a good stiff backbone and soft tip, I also cast 1/16oz jigs with this rod.
It is personal preferences; however you do learn to adjust hookset and retrieval techniques depending on the rod and line that you use. There are many who like the stiffer rods for flipping the fish into the boat instead of netting every time. I still use BGJPs for 4 of my 6 spider rigging rods.
If you watch or talk with a bass guy about their crankbait rod, you’ll find them with a softer middle than most of their stiffer rods. I believe that is to allow the bait to do the work without tearing it loose. I have a hard time with super soft action rods and stick with a medium to fast action, even with my ultralights. Use what works best for ya.
