Pontoon Carpet Replacement

Everyone......

I've owned the carpet for a year.....a nice carpet with backing. I believe it is 24oz.....

But my question: I bought this boat with already EXTREMELY WORN, USED CARPET, with plans to replace it. Well, continued to fish on it a couple more years, and bought carpet during winter 2023.....then had a stroke and heart surgery. So, figured it's time to get that put on in the next couple weeks.

What type of glue do you all recommend? It is going onto the plywood that came on the boat (except for a couple places that I am going to replace), and I assume that is marine grade.....

Suggestions?

Thanks in advance. I am going to start pulling everything off tomorrow (unless the tornados, wind, and weather take it off for me tonight)!

Good morning Mr Willis. I have to tell you before I start that I have a tendency to overbuild but seldom have to revisit what I do. First is the wood. My thought is to treat the wood with a 50/50 mix of polyurethane and acetone. It soaks way deeper than most sealers and gives the glue a better surface to hold to. There’s lots of glues to do the job and removing the old is a bear sometimes. Get as much as you can get off and then a coarse grit grinder wheel on an angle grinder for the rest. When I built boats we used contact cement, weld wood brand was the best we found. We coated both surfaces and alloyed them together wet and made sure they stayed together while they dried. Double tough to come off when done this way. Use lots of ventilation as the fumes are strong. Extra around the edges or busy spots. Don’t use a utility knife, too dull. A carpet layers razor knife is the ticket and please be careful as they really are a razor. There’s some other glues that are kind of multi purpose and I’ve never used em except over concrete when I laid rug. Worked ok but took a lot longer to bind and dry. Hope this helps some.
