Back a ga-zillion years ago when I first started fishing here in Florida, mainly north central Florida, one of the go-to baits for bream was gar fish roe. A lot of mom & pop fish bait shops had it. They sold it frozen and wrapped in newspaper. One thing you had to be careful of was cleaning your hands after handling it. The word was that it was poisonous to humans. I haven't seen any for sale in maybe 50 years. I can't imagine how they harvested it.
