Hit bottom and almost ran out of Gadwall flank feathers so hadn't been tying any in quite awhile. I reached out on a different site and gentleman said he had a few he could send me. Certainly got a lot more than expected. Will trim up a bag and get stocked back up. Attachment 501009
Good haul. I need to check into finding and getting some of those as well. They make the prettiest jigs.
After trimming up a bag I tied up some gadwall using #4, 6 and 8 hooks. These will be added to the 500 or so other jigs in my tackle bag for this mornings trip. Probably tie on a #6 to start with. Gadwall is a dark barred feather compared to mallard, have better success with it the last few years. The guys I've been getting mine from have had really bad years with the weather!! So no feathers - still have one bag of mixed feathers I have to sort out.
I fished with these almost exclusively Thursday in super windy conditions, glad I brought the warm jacket. Eyes couldn't stop watering. The first cast curse raised it's ugly head catching the one and only crappie of the day, too small to be picture worthy. Didn't get another bite for over two hours before catching two bluegill on back to back casts before snagging up and losing my jig. Lost four of these jigs today. Wind still blowing hard so will be tying something today and visiting a couple fly shops to stock back up on some bunny hair and palmer chenille.
Maybe one day you'll show us how you trim them feathers. Mentioning it for a friend, of coarse...
I trim each feather just above where the fuzzy part of the feather ends. I store them in zip loc bags removing the air and pressing flat to remove some of the curl in the feathers. I use two feathers for each jig. One tied in at top aligning spine of feather with hook shank. Turn and add bottom feather. There is a you tube video from about four years ago showing me tying one.
