Another Combo comparison

This is the time of year to try out rods and reels I haven’t fished in a while .
This evening I got to fish a couple minutes past an hour at the Town Pond .
The weather was decent, 49-50 degrees high , wind 7-14mph NNW .

Combo included a St Croix original Panfish series 6’9” ULF paired with a Shimano Soare bb 2000sspg , and a second generation Panfish Series 6’ ULF with an old Shimano Sahara 500fe , both with 2# Floroclear line .
Lures were .87g , 4.6mm tungsten Brad jigs with a size 10 hook , with a Mini Trout Magnet body .

I fished each combos until I caught a couple fish with each , then I put the Soare bb 2000sspg on the 6’ newer model Panfish series rod to finish out , catching four more fish, for a total of eight in 62 minutes .
I liked the six footer better than the 6’9” for twitching, even though the 6’9” cast fine and was plenty sensitive. The six footer better than, with the 2000 reel felt lighter and was more comfortable fishing IMO . The longer rod felt a little front heavy .
The longer rod extends the ends of the pivot point , putting more pressure on my wrist and elbow .
Only one bluegill , my first caught today .
I you guys get tired of my trip reports let me know and I’ll do a weekly report instead of individual reports .

I don’t like when they feel tip heavy. Too hard to fish.

Neither do I Dave . And the only way to balance out the rod is to use a heavier reel , which makes the whole outfit heavier .
I want to fish , not get a workout :)

Even if I add a heavier reel to balance the rod , the length the ends of the pivot point uses more energy to twitch a lure more than with a shorter balanced rod .

Not sure that’s the right explanation, but basically, a longer rod requires more lift to move the lure .

You post as many reports on the gear that you feel like, I’m glad to have them to read. Being a weekend warrior for the most part the only fishing I get midweek is from folks like you. Rock on! I too am critical of longer rods and find that a few 6’6” rods i have suit my taste, one being a TSS. Another is a browning airstream (I think) and it’s a much different action, more ultra than light. Big guides that suit a 2000 series reel. The fish you got today would’ve kept me entertained, and that’s what it’s all about in the end.

Might could add a little weight to butt of rod. I have a rod with washer weights and a screw that’s made to adjust the rod. I know ideally you want as light weight as possible though.

Nice to see the bass are biting, even if it's not the gills you want. Longer rods are tougher to find that perfect balance that we want compared to rods that are shorter. I mostly fish longer rods in the 7' range because they protect light line so well. I like the 2000 shallow spool reels over 1000 size. They balance very well with most of my rods. I don't experiment much, once I find a combo that has the perfect balance they always stay together, mates for life.
