for weighted bobbers rig (Mr crappie lighted bobbers) , do you prefer long or short rod? Why? Will I see significant difference in distance between 7’ and 7’11”? How about ease of casting?
Thinking of getting another 7’11 rod when I need more casting distance.
How much distance do you need. I seldom hear crappie fisherman requesting more casting distance.
I have done side by side casting comparisons. You are not going to see much difference at all in distance. A little - possibly - 5 feet I'd fetch a guess from my testing. Worth it? Up to the angler.
You'll get a bit more sweep on the hook set too. I like the easier handling and landing of fish with the shorter rods personally.
I have seen a bit of difference between a 7' rod & a 8' rod ... mostly in the "line pickup rate" on the hookset at distance. Outside of that, I can't say if it gives any more distance or ease of casting, because I don't use bobbers/floats often enough to make those determinations. (I'm also not using the same types of rods/reels as you use :notworthy )
I switched from a 7' to an 8' for casting/fishing a jig & cork set up. My normal set-up for jig & cork is using a fixed float and fishing 2'- 6' deep depending on the mood of the fish. Since I'm using a fixed float with this set-up I like the flexibility of the longer rod with being able to fish the jig a lot deeper. With all that said I do feel I get a little more distance.
For getting a longer distance while casting, going to a larger diameter spool can help you get the same or even better results.
What kind of line are you using? You can get more distance with lighter lb test. Some anglers use 2 lb which I doubt I ever would but 2 lb would absolutely sail
GUYS .... JB is fishing from a pier/walkway in most cases, plus he's casting with shallow spool baitcast reels on Japanese rods.

Thank you @ pappy for nice long introduction LOL. Yes I mostly fishing from Dock and need to cast more than 60’ to get to spot sometime. I do have 7’3” UL rod for 1/32-1/16oz jig for this purpose but when casting with heavy weighted bobbers it is different story (using spinning outfit). Why I need some weight? I live in Low Pressure area where always get some wind in the evening though night (unfortunately it is cross wind). My mainline always be Nanofil 6-8lb or Gliss 12-18lb with 6lb mono leader. I need about 2-5’ leader length below fixed bobbers.
My rod right now is 7’ bass ML rod (or course Majorcraft as @pappy call it Japanese Rod lol)which is good for such weight. This rod can cast 1/16oz jig plus plastic pretty good distance. To be honest I can cast jig head further than bobbers setup.
