I made a trip to Indian Creek today primarily to give the Daiwa J Braid x8 a try on my jig rod. I got the 8lb (2lb diameter) Chartreuse and put it on an old Pflueger Cetina 4u underspin reel that I use single pole and spider rigging. Worked well with no issues on an underspin spincast reel instead of the normal spinning reel. The water was 66 degrees with visibility of about a foot but very little current. I kept 6 and returned about a dozen larger fish. Slow day, fun to try something new.
always good to read your reports. I was there Saturday in my canoe and struggled to get a few dinks but catfish were on fire eating a white maribou jig. I never seem to pick the right day for that place

It was slow today, nothing like me and you a few years ago putting 100 in the boat without trying every trip. The water needs to cool and drop another foot.

They bite fine once the water gets into the 60's where we are now, it just seems the water getting into the 50's packs the creeks with bait and fish. Just what I've observed over the years. Once they finish lowering the lakes along the Tennessee for winter draw down you see the water raise and lower a foot a day above Decatur due to Guntersville Dam generating power during the day. I think that stead current in and back out of the creeks and rivers also makes a big difference. The Crappie use the laydowns as current breaks and ambush points making them very predictable. Best guess right now is Indian Creek is loaded with fish but they're swimming around following the baitfish schools feeding. I picked up a couple yesterday with a Roadrunner deep (10 to 12 feet) in the middle of the creek. The trouble is sorting out the gills and stripe plus hanging on submerged brush and breaking off.
I am suprised that braid is not getting pulled under the spool on hooksets

At least with Crappie the hook set is always soft along with my drag and I use an ultralight pole.
I've just put some on a spincast reel that I use casting small jigs. We'll see if it will works on it also. I'm less hopeful, but it would be nice to cast 8lb strength line with a 2lb diameter.
Are you tying straight onto the braid?

Mono to the spool so it won't slip, then mono spliced to the braid and fill the spool on the reel. I'm then tying my bait directly to the braid.
I like the not breaking off part. When fishing laydowns and brush I spend more time retying than fishing. May give it a try.
