Just curious if anyone has ever tried this. I got to thinking, if a slower fall rate is what someone’s after, has anyone ever tried vertical jigging a fly underneath a sinker? Just replace a jig head with a crappie fly. Tiny baits but you got a big sinker to get it to the fish. Just a thought since I’ve been playing around with the new livescope

Not really a "fly", per se, but a "popeye" jig was used by a buddy of mine to coax some fish to the boat ... when they otherwise basically ignored the usual jig/plastics offerings he normally catches fish on. So, yeah .... if they're put off by large or even normal size baits, there's always a chance that a tiny little "fly" would get their attention.
I also know of another buddy of mine that used "popeye" jigs in the dead of Winter, casting them to open boat slips at a marina to catch some nice Crappie. I see no reason why a small splitshot a foot above a "fly" wouldn't also work in that situation.

I’ve used tiny 1/32 or 1/64 jigs below a weight before with good success. Not a fly but tiny jig and it works.
it would to seem to me that a big sinker above a tiny jig or fly would cause it to fall rapidly , if I am not mistaken ,lot's of people do this when it is a tiny jig bite using LS technology ....
as far as me , I want nothing but line above my tiny jig and or rather frequently with the addition in some cases of a pencil float in between ...
It does make it hard to detect a bite sometimes. But it sure is better than waiting 2 hours for the tiny jig to sink... :Rofl
You’re right, it would scream down to the depth the sinker is pegged. But if you were to tie a barrel swivel below the sinker and tie a short light line leader to the fly, it would allow the fly to just float down to the crappie. Should work in theory. LolQuote:

That's essentially the same thing. You can watch it on Livescope slowly sink below the weight. Lots of guys do this with Livescope.
Would be killer when they get finicky.

I’ve yet to do it with a fly but when they are spawning up shallow dragging a small jig will get it done. Maybe next spring I will try a fly rod and some flies and see how it goes
