2-Trips 4-Combos 9-Fish
I fish lake Kedron today , about 1 1/2 hours this morning, and about forty-five minutes this afternoon.
Temp was in the low 80’s but felt warmer , fishing in the direct sunshine .
But I wanted to try a couple pair of similar combos , one with braid , one with 2# Floroclear.
This morning it was a couple 4’10” Major Craft Finetail Glass rods paired with Shimano 500 reels .
This afternoon it was a couple 5’ St Croix Premier ULM rods with Shimano 500 reels .
Identical handtied tungsten jigs on all combos. Size 10 Sickel hooks with 4mm tungsten beads .
With the MC glass rods , I was hoping the braid would surpass or at least equal the Floroclear because the braid aides in sensitivity with the glass .
The MC Glass have micro guides and I could hear my knot to the leader as it snagged on the guides during the cast . I shortened my leader to about 18” and cured that issue , but the 2# Floroclear still cast better .
With the SC Premiers , I didn’t have any knot issues because the guides are a bigger diameter .
But the 2# Floroclear still won the casting contest.
But I was supposed to be fishing, not just casting and most of the fish available around the docks with the water level down over a foot , we’re small and the sickle hooks weren’t hooking up like I wanted .
I only caught 3 fish in the morning using the sickle hooks , but could feel hits that weren’t resulting in hookups .
In the afternoon, after a little casting experimenting, I switched my jig to a size 12 streamer hook jig with a 3mm tungsten bead on my SC Premier combo with 2# Floroclear.
In about 20 minutes I hooked up six fish , although they were smaller .
I take what I can get . A fish is a fish .
The better ones from today .
Tomorrow, if I get to go , I’ll be taking a couple Palms Quattro 4’6” rods to try out .
