That middle pictures shows some well defined beautiful coloration. My bride and I took some.kids from church to a local pond fishing yesterday and filled a bucked with some very nice gills like you caught. They took a bath last night in hot grease and the kids devoured them!
I stay away from river fish as well.
That's a colorful hand full of gills. Dog days of summer are certainly here and with the warmest weather and water maybe the fishes are uncomfortable. Been bass fishing a lot this past month and most bites are in shady areas with brush. Only biting early, tough bite after 8am. Had four yesterday by 7:30 and didn't get bit again and left at 9. Too hot for me and maybe the fish feel the same way.
We live on the river and that is what we get to fish. We can get in the creeks and coves and get better fish but river fishing is what we have, and this time of year that is about the size we get. We get good colors, nice and vivid but no size to them.
Great colors on those fish!

Yes, river pans put up that little extra fight. Our creeks and streams are all off limits for eating. I pretty much just stay with salt water.
