BFS for trout fishing?

Can anyone recommend a BFS setup for trout fishing? I’m thinking a baitcaster for light tackle spooled with 4lb or 6lb mono and a sensitive ultralight rod in the 5-6’ range. I noticed that couple of my spinning reels need some TLC (or may find out that they need to be replaced—they are kinda old) on my last trip to the White River the past weekend, and with BFS becoming more mainstream, what are reasonable options.

I’ll be honest, I only use baitcasters with line counters when pulling crankbaits, and I normally use spinning reels with ultralights when crappie fishing in the shallows or trout fishing while floating down the river; most of my fishing is using jig poles spider rigging for crappie.

How much are you looking to spend on the rod and reel?

A bit hard but it could be done if you are open to purchasing from Aliexpress. Tsurinoya dark wolf ultra for the reel and a Tsurinoya stream trout rods should be under $150.

I own a Tsurinoya Genius reel. In my opinion it’s okay, but can be a bit tricky to work with. Among the Chinese reels Haibo Arise Air is the most reliable. Backlashes on it are minimal. Much like a Shimano or Daiwa BFS reel. Currently it’s for around $110 on Aliexpress. Ace Hawk BFS rod would be under $50. I have an Ace Hawk venom and it’s decent for the price.

A nice combo would be Tsurinoya Dragon for rod and Haibo Arise Air for the reel. But it would go over the $150 limit.

Sorry had not factored in shipping for the Haibo. With shipping it’s around $130. But worth every penny.

On the domestic market you may be able to get your hands on a kastking zephyr. But I have no personal experience with it.

You want a good reel. Else it’s frustrating to keep picking out backlashes. For the rod you can find some options for under $50.

I can say I’m very happy with my Haibo Arise Air. The knobs are very thin, but you can now purchase Haibo arise know covers for approx $7. The Tsurinoya reel delivers 8-9 perfect casts and will inexplicably backlash on the 10th.
