6/7/2024 Went Catfish Hunting Checking On Spawn

Last year we found the Blue Cats stacked up in the deep deep bends of the Funky River late June and through July. Soooo my Bride, my Grandson and myself decided to check out the River. We launched at 10:30 AM, a late start and then the AC installation guy called as we were driving to the launch and said he would be by my house in 3 hours. We had 2 hours to fish. Period. The blue cats were not grouped up but we found them at 2 levels. The ones at 4 to 5 feet deep were taking our market bait the ones at 20 plus feet were not interested at all. Kept 16 and had to head in with them still biting due to AC issues at home. Great 2 hours on the water and never even started the outboard motor. We trolled away from the dock and started catching fish.

Kay would say you were Slumming going catfishing. Why I never keep any. There was a restaurant on Michoud Blvd, right across the tracks that did a Red Beans & rice lunch with fried catfish instead of sausage. I tried to hit their lunch any time I was in town and on that side of the city. Kay eats two fish fried, Crappie & Marsh Bass, tears Sushi up. Other than that I better be frying some shrimp too if she is eating. The Catfish schools around the Hwy 90 middle river bridges are 5lb catfish and up. Too numerous times I Side scanned those bridges in summer on a NIP Tide and saw massive schools of catfish some 7-10 pounders.

yawl ever try using a float to hit the spawner kitty fish ? we used to use a float when they were up on the dam doing it , sure could hammer a ton of them fast that way ....small treble hook ,about 3 foot from a small float and no sinker .....some chicken liver or "rays chicken blood" and KABOOM

We have jug lines that we put out but with live scope we find the cats then watch the bait float down to the fish level and Kaboom!! You can actually watch the sinker start to move the left or right as the cat swims away with the bait and hook. That's when we set the hook and fish on!!

These cats hang out at the 35 to 40 feet of water level when spawning. A slip cork would probably work but seeing it happen on the screen is easier and keeps the grandkids coming back for more.
