I have had this boat about 4 years and had low compression a couple of years ago and had a jasper engine replacement. All is running great. I have always used quicksilver oil in it but am wondering about trying some other oil. I see BPS has some considerably cheaper and has good reviews. Just wondering what others here do. It had always had quicksilver when it developed problems and required a new motor
Me personally I use OEM oil and filters in anything I own. I bet a lot will scoff at this comment, but come challenge me on anything that I own. That's alot of vehicles (company & personal) plus enough equipment and boats to fill a warehouse. Cheap insurance in my simple mind.

I’ve been using Pannzoil Marine 2-Stroke Synthetic Blend for the most part since 2007 on my ‘85 Evinrude 150, which still runs very well, although I mix my oil because I removed the VRO around 2008 or 2009. If you still use the oil injection system, you’d probably will want to stick to Quicksilver unless you can find reviews on your engine and the oil that you want to try. Another forum such as Bass Boat Central or Reddit may have more advice on this.
why remove the vro?
It's a piece of mind sort of deal. I'm not versed well in Mercury engines. I do have a 91' Evinrude 150 that runs like a top. VRO removed 30 year's ago and have to pre mix fuel. I believe at one time VRO were known to fail in short causing engine failures.

VROs were problematic at one time to the point that just about all mechanics recommended removing VRO on the older engines. In fact, had we been mixing oil on a ‘90’s Mercury instead of depending on the oil injection system, I probably wouldn’t have burned up my dad’s outboard when I was in college due to a check valve failure. Newer 2-strokes may be better, but I’ll always mix on an older carbed 2-stroke.Quote:

I guess to add to this is that Quicksilver (Mercury) and Yamalube (Yamaha) were typically easier to find in some stores compared to Johnson/Evinrude, which may have contributed to me using Pennzoil so often. I do run across Johnson/Evinrude at a Walmart and Academy in other areas on occasion but not as consistently as the other brands.

I run whichever is cheapest at Walmart in my old '93 90 hp Johnson. Lately that has been pennzoil. I made spark plugs and disc brakes for a living and the shapes might have been a bit different and the names are changed but the insides of all the products were the same. Local service station owners tell me it's the same with oil....just different names on the 55 gallon cans. I dunno.............
As long as the two stroke oil has a TS3 rating, it is supposed to be compatible with all two stroke outboards. That being said, I still only run Yamalube oil in mine.
