Fishing with the Crappie Master — I’m still Clueless.
Have you ever fished with a Crappie Master — or, maybe you are one ?
I have a friend who IS one, and every time we fish together, it seems like I am fishing with the crappie fishing GOAT!
I have fished for crappie with him for years, both in my boat, his boat, and from “The Crappie Dock”. (see my post (“The Crappie Dock, A Beautiful Thing”).
I am out-fished by Charlie every time we fish together, no matter what the situation is, and no matter what the conditions are — and I mean EVERY time!
Now, you might think that this would be at least slightly irritating to me, but it’s not, — He is a real pleasure to watch, and fish with. I’m just trying to figure out what is happening here — and what exactly is my friend doing, for this to be a repeating thing, time, and time again!
Now, you could say, “Well, Ed, maybe it’s as simple as YOU just haven’t learned how to fish for crappie yet”!
And I would accept that reasoning, if it were true — but I have been fishing for bass, crappie, perch, trout, etc., for 70 years now . . . (yeah, I’m old) and I have been able to learn, and develop a few successful techniques of my own since I made my first cast as a 10 year-old boy.
Additionally, if it were only me — that would be one thing, but I have witnessed him over the years, out fish EVERY other fisherman too! — they mumble under their breath at his crappie numbers! : )
No, sir! There’s something going on with that Crappie Master Charlie!
I have fished 2 feet from him, watched his every move, used exactly the same line, jig, SLOW reeling technique, cast and retrieve, and the result is always the same — he will outfish me, and everyone else who is fishing, at about 3 to our 1.
And on a real slow day, if he only catches two — guess how many you’ve caught?
He will gladly give you one of his Arkie jigs, switch rods with you (if you asked) but it wouldn’t help.
Many, many, times on The Crappie Dock, he will have 5, or maybe 10 fish in his bucket when others have only three, one, or none!
And, at quitting time, he’s always the guy who has fish to give to the guys who didn’t have much luck!
No, sir!, there’s something going on with that Crappie Master Charlie! : )
