I made this basket a few years ago to keep fish til I have enough to clean.Using vinyl coated Hardware fabric/PVC, I had a hatch on it and removed it. This January a blue heron was having a buffet.It ate 3 crappie,3 bream,& 1 bass before I saw his footprints on the frosty dock leading to the basket.
I put a new hatch back on there,his buffet days are over...

Glad you found out what was getting them. Without that wire on top it was easy pickins for that heron.
Pretty cool. I think I see some foam added. Does it float or sink?
Add some pool noodles across the top PVC frame so that it will float.
Them critters will certainly steal your dinner
It has black foam in the top and floats,but I keep it tied to a cleat a little out of the water so they can come up as needed.I read the blue heron has night vision so he has an advantage over us.,
