First con I can think of is ..... you've already passed whatever you're looking at on the screen. That would include 2d/DI/SI image units. For those units that have 360deg scanning capabilities, you'd have to understand that you are "actually" X number of feet closer to the images you're seeing on the screen. For Forward Facing scanners ... you'd have to have a way to turn the tdx from your position, plus you'd have to allow for the distance between you and the tdx when measuring the distance to your target IF the target is directly in front of the boat, if the tdx is stationary. IF the tdx is movable by some mechanism you control, you would still have to account for the difference in distance between the tdx & the target & where you are.
I have Livescope & a Hook 7 at the bow, and both tdx's are mounted on the trolling motor. I don't have any use for transom mounted tdx's, as I don't fish waters where I need to know the depth when running down the lakes I fish.
In my thinking a side scan becomes useless with the ducer turning with the tm instead of the boat :popcorn
Im guessing transducer mounts are different for different styles of fishing.
Mega 360 would work well in the front of the boat
I'm thinking sorta the same way, but my DI works pretty well on the TM .... and to me, side scan is just a wider degree DI. Both work better and show better/clearer images when boat is moving along at a good clip. Side scan will still show good images with the tdx on the TM, but you have to turn the TM slowly or you'll get garbage images until you slow down the turn or stop it. And, of course, the TM has to be moving the boat forward.
I went from 2d to DI, skipped over SI & added LS ... & turned my DI unit into a GPS/maps/waypoints unit. SO ... my opinion is a little biased.
In my Opinion way more benefits having transducer on the trolling motor, marking waypoints more accurate, know when directly over structure, SI finding marking structure, distance to structure and where it is in relation to the boat, any fish on that structure with out having to run over it.
Bricks, I get what you are saying. I've never really had a problem with marking spots with a transom mount. I just throw a marker out and know that I'm close enough to find it in a few casts. It's just like beer... everyone has their favorite. :cheers2
Pulling jigs or crankbaits when in the back seat, a transom mounted tranducer works well.
My other 2 boats have transom mounted transducers and I like it that way. Especially for pulling. I just ordered a new boat and thought about putting it on the tm like most people do. Then I realized that the si would turn with the tm and not give a true image of boat location vs tm direction. I think I will stay with transom mount. I'm used to that anyway.
