Hi folks, this is just a question on how to keep my double uni knot as small and secure as possible so as not to have problem with passing through rod guides and reels. I like using double uni just because I can tie it quickly, but it's a little bulky. I use 8lb Spider Wire or Fireline braid with a 6lb Vanish floro leader. Wonder about how many wraps to use on my knots and possibly using Yo Zuri floro which is smaller diameter. Wonder how others deal with this. Thanks for any help.

Personally I use the Alberto knot to tie braid to mono. It’s supposed to work with fluorocarbon too.

It is the flouro portion of the knot thats ticking through the guides. I would shorten the length of the flouro to keep the knot outside the end guide, prior to casting, if it was troubling me. The Uni is a constriction knot and will draw tight around the braid, but only so tight. The material will not go any smaller. The braid will of course, which is why it isn’t an issue.
I read that the fish do not shy away from braid line, or high viz stuff. That never made much sense to me though.
Flouro is not invisible underwater. If it’s unique molecular composition were to make it invisible, then it would be invisible at 400 pound test, too. It is not. The best way to gain some invisibility is to get skinny line. The skinnier the more invisible. Mono flouro whatever. You could try dropping down to 4 pound, if you think you could get by with it. That might reduce the ticking through the guides. It breaks way too easy for my taste.
You could also try tying a Figure 8 knot on the flouro, then UNI the braid around the line above it. Pulling hard might get a smaller knot, but it wouldn’t be that much smaller. Just maybe less prone to catch on the guides.
Another knot to try is the Nail knot. Nail to Nail also is more durable over time. It draws down and then just sits there. UNI knots can and will continue to constrict over time and need retying to keep up. Has to do with braid. Mono/flouro kind of relaxes a little after being stressed. Braid cinches tighter, but then there is no recovery. It just stays tighter. Over time it can cut itself free. This does not happen with the Nail knot. Your application might not stress the line enough to have mystery separations.
Maybe someone who has solved the dilemma will chime in for you. Sounds like an irritant for you.
I use the the alberto knot, (6 wraps up 6 wraps down with the braid using the mono as the loop) that said I run mostly 8 lb braid usually power pro white if I can find it, yellow or blue if not and have went to a 4 or 6 lb mono leader as mono is less bulky. In a pinch use the triple surgen knot.
I wish all my rods had big eyes for that very reason and it pays to check the integrity of the knot often as it gets frayed.
I tie this because it’s simple to tie and the one I can remember in my old age.
