Beach Trip (Pensacola Beach, Fl)

This is a super late post. We were at the beach in May and I got a chance to try out some of my new gear. I used 3 combos at the beach…

Yamaga Blanks 8’5” TZ Nano w/ 2500 Daiwa Airity (13 lb Varivas X8)
Daiwa Gekkabijin 7’5H w/ 2500 Daiwa Luvias (13 lb Varivas X8)
Major Craft X Ride 7’6” w/ 2000 Daiwa Airity (9.2 lb Varivas Avani)

My main goal was to target pompano but I had no such luck. All the resets were showing pompano in Gulf Shores, Al and we were in Pensacola, Fl. Pier reports were showing chunky pompano being caught off the pier in Alabama. The drive to Bama for me would have been a little over an hour and I was only fishing a few hours each morning. A typical day of fishing was daylight until around 8 or 8:30 and then I would head up to condo to help with breakfast and the little ones. I ended up catching a lot of various fish on metal jigs and some on pompano jigs. I had a blast following bait schools and slinging jigs. The YB rod was a ton of fun and I am glad I picked it up and the new airity. It was such a relaxing vacation with tons of toothy critters caught. Most common catches were spanish, blues, and ladyfish. Here are some pics for your enjoyment.

Nice catches. Those salty fish are some fighters

Good job. No clue what most of them are.

Looks like fun to me ! Are a few of those Spanish Mackerel? Good fighters .
I miss my saltwater trips my brother and I used to make about three times a year.
We would fish inland March areas from Tybie Island down to St Simons .
I used light action rods and 1000 size reels with 6# line to catch seatrout , flounder, and an occasional redfish.

Spanish Mackerel were what I primarily caught and they were a ton of fun. Sometimes all I would do is pop the metal jig two or three times and bring back a frayed leader. They can cut you off on a 30lb leader like it’s nothing ��

Them critters have teeth. I section of steel leader helps with that.

That post really makes me miss the coast ! I enjoyed seeing the pictures, I need to schedule a trip sometime soon, but work somehow keeps getting in the way :-(

Some nice gear used to get some nice sized fish!! I know the blues are drag burners and the Spanish get with it too. Glad you had a good trip, sorry about the Pompano, they’re evasive for me too. If I go looking for them they aren’t around. You had the right jig though. Glad it left you smiling, and thanks for taking us along.
