Lyman Lake - Upstate SC - Total Crappie Noob.

Hi all,

Newbie here to the Crappie forums as well as Crappie fishing. Looking for any tips/advice from anyone in the Upstate of SC that fishes on Lyman Lake in Lyman. We have a boat and on our last trip out (2 days ago) we managed to catch a couple of bluegill (always fun) but that's about it.

Would love to get some tips and thoughts on locations there to fish and try to catch a Crappie or two. It's one fish I've never seen in person nor have ever caught (or eaten!) one and it's on my 'bucket list' of fish to catch :)

Even if you have a 'hot spot' and willing to share some info with a newb on this lake. Just want to learn and teach my boys how to fish better.

Welcome to Crappie.com, I'm not sure if I have ever seen a Lake Lyman report posted anywhere but I would think someone on here may have fished it for crappie before. Time of the water will teach you about the lake and spend some time reading the reports posted about other lakes.

I grew up fishing that lake and haven’t fished it in decades.
We always thought the lake was over populated with crappie as you could fish docks and brush piles and catch all you wanted but mostly small fish but good eating size.
There was good size bluegill in there too with some fun fly rod catching and phenomenal bass fishing.
I’m sure it still has plenty of crappie , just concentrate on the brush around the many docks and offshore if you can find them.
Lets us know your progress there, stay after them is the only way to learn the lake.

I live less than a mile from the lake and have fished it some. They drained it down about 6 feet to re-build the dam. Took almost 2 years! Been full for about 6 months now. Caught crappie under the boat houses and up in a few coves to the left of the ramp about 1/2 way up the lake. Fish were plentiful but small (7-10"). PM me if you need any further info.

Thanks all! Def see a ton of boat houses and from watching YT videos they look to be crappie kingdoms! We went out the other day in a cove and caught a number of bluegill and had a blast.

For bait, recommend to try live minnows or jigs? Only have used jigs on a slip bobber so far. The lake is pretty brown/murky and my white jigs did well with the bluegill so thinking maybe something similar for crappie?

Can't wait to get back out there for sure. :)

Jigs will work well. You may want to look at shooting docks and boat houses for crappie with jigs on yt also.
