Kayak Trip Report, Limestone Bay/Creek

I fished Limestone from 1PM till dark. Wind was rough and a little cool, but great day on the water. I only kept six of the smaller Crappie I like but released 43 that were between 12 and 15 inches all dressed in their tuxedos. I also returned numerous short fish. In the creek and where there was current the water was 62 degrees, but it was 65 to 67 degrees in the pits. A few came off jig and bobber, but most from single poling a 10-foot jig rod using a 1/32oz White Marabou jig. The fish were in two to three feet of water and protecting beds aggressively. Almost all were males, and they would try and take the jig rod out of my hand when they hit. The water is clear with visibility of about 12 inches in the pits, where there's current the water is clearer. The water is also within a foot of full summer pool. I wished we didn't have the cold temperatures moving in tonight, but they'll be back on by tomorrow afternoon or the following day.

Great report DB, Cotaco is the exact opposite right now. The water is muddy and the crappie have fled to their high water hiding spots. So good to see others getting on them!

Sounds like a great trip

So here's a question....I have not fished Limestone at all....how far back are the gators? Can I fish in a different area to stay away from the gators? I would like to go out but thoughts of a gator attack won't leave my mind! haha!

gators have been spotted from just below Guntersville Dam all the way to wheeler dam and in the lower flint and south huntsville as well as wheeler refuge.....they may turn up in any water you fish in southern madison and limestone county. I see them in limestone because thats where I fish a lot but if I fished ditto a lot Im sure I would see them there...just be careful and dont aggitate them or feed them.

Thank you! Not sure I feel better now....but it does make sense. I have fished from 2nd creek, anderson creek, cotaco creek, indian/barron, to ditto and guntersville and never seen one.....guess I am lucky!

I guess Limestone is where they like to lay out and be photographed.

Great trip. A buddy fished limestone yesterday until about 2 He caught 4 crappie, a big cat and lots of big stripe. He also saw the big Gater in the pit next to the bay early yesterday. first time he has seen one. Said pictures does not do it justice. Wish it was not going to rain most of next week and muddy everything up. I have enjoyed seeing the gaters in limestone especially the big ones. from what i have read, the big ones are probably 40 plus years old. Main thing is abide by what everyone has said, don't feed them and give them there space and enjoy them from a distance.

I thought it was about time for the Marabou jigs. I will have the jig pole ready to go the next time i go. The jig pole and marabou jig have became my favorite ways to catch them
