Not Crappie related, but...
I watched the weigh ins for the BASS Classic this weekend. Awesome that the trophy is now the Ray Scott trophy. Before you bad mouth BASS, think about it. They put fishing tourneys on the map. That led to crappie tourneys as well. Anyway, I think 2 first's happened. A Canadian won for the first time. And more interesting a Lund boat won over all the rangers, skeeters, nitro's and even xpress boats. Lund is a fine boat. Congrats Jeff Gustafson and Congrats Lund.
Not Crappie related, but...
I fished bass tournaments for years and was a member of the 1980 Georgia BASS Federation Top 6 team that finished 2nd in the World Championship. I think that gives me insight to say my piece.
Crappie fishermen were always laughed at by many of the bass community. It was said a 25 boat bass club could launch and blast off before one “perch jerker” could get his crap ready and his boat in the water. Many bassers I saw would run all over other fishermen to get to a chosen spot. I learned to despise many in the bass industry because of their arrogance. Folks like Hank Parker, Jimmy Houston, and Ray Scott were down-to-earth, good people. Tom Mann was my all time choice as the nicest person I ever met in bass fishing.
When I moved my family back to Ky Lake my bass fishing career soon came to an end. I just couldn’t agree with the attitudes and disrespect. I found I enjoyed the laid back nature of crappie fishing and fishermen much more. That hasn’t changed.
I worked with the guy who developed and patented the Black Widow rod holders that helped start the spider rig craze.
One thing that has always bothered me greatly is many innovations in marine electronics, trolling motors, and fishing techniques were developed by crappie fisherman with crappie fishermen in mind and from their demands. Many times those new innovations were scoffed at by the bass community.
Livescope is a prime example. I remember some bass guys making fun of live sonar and saying it’s a gimmick that bass guys don’t need. Now every bass guy has one and the companies skew most of their advertising toward the bass industry. The BassMaster’s Classic was recently won with Mega Live. I’m sure the electronics companies will now spend the vast percentage of their advertising and sponsor $$ on the bass guys.
I and many others get scorn for dressing a bass at a public cleaning station. Some say bass are to be revered, like a family member, and each and ever one released. I grew up eating bass and continue to enjoy one occasionally. If one of my clients want to keep a legal bass that they catch on a trip with me, I say the state says we can legally keep six per day, and I’ll dress it for them. When bass guys stop keeping crappie, I’ll stop keeping bass.
Crappie fishermen will continue to be the red-headed stepchild. Maybe that’s OK.
Rant over. Never mind!
