Big G, 30 Dec 22
Anthony B and I made a venture out to the Big G this morning to check out the conditions and see if we could find a few fish. It was a very pleasant trip, but the fish had a serious case of lock-jaw this morning! Not a single crappie to be found by us or anyone else around us. Water clarity was 4.5 - 5', clearest I've seen it in years. Another guy there at the causeway we were fishing said that the water temp was 42. Guess they haven't turned back on yet with all the cold fronts blowing thru.

Was hoping to see/ hear better results for the big G but the fish were stunned with a 12 to 15 degree temp drop and the snow that also helped lower the temp over a 4 day period!! Its all about bait ,before the deep freeze there was tons of minnows on the causeway and around the bridge, probably a lot of die off for the bait fish and the ones that survived are out over the old creek channels mouths where they run into the river. The crappie i would think are near them but suspended deep. They got to eat some time but their metabolism has been slowed way down. Hoping all the rain will bring up the water temp to at least the upper 40's or even into the lower 50's Probably be next week late before return to normal. None of the present 9 to 15 inch crappie had ever seen water that cold. Good slap in the face for them.

Haven’t been out myself but with the cold front I’d definitely slowly way down and down size the bait big time, hand tie time.

Thank you for the update! My friend and I tried Big G today too and had a very similar experience. We caught 1 crappie early and no more. We finally left around 2PM.
One bridge had shad everywhere from surface to about 25ft deep. Birds were just diving and taking 2” threadfin shad almost the entire time we were parked there. The shad were schooling so thick it made the fish finder look like it was almost malfunctioning! We managed one very small white bass near the bottom and had one additional fish that got off before we could tell what it was.
I’m still pretty new to crappie fishing so I’m sad no one caught them well today but makes me feel better that it wasn’t ALL that my technique was off. Haha

Big G Stands for Guntersville Lake located in North Alabama created by TVA when they dammed up the Tennessee river to make Hydro electric energy and for flood control by permanently flooding woods and farm lands that would go underwater when the old Tennessee river would flood back in the early 1900's. Made a nice pond that has a few crappie in it But more famous for its Green trout population, heaven forbid you keep one of them:Rofl

While crappie fishing and one of those tournament guys is around, I love to catch a nice big green trout, lift it up high for all to see and admire, then throw it in my bucket to watch the distain and disgust on their face! lol
Of course, I go and throw it back in the lake when they aren't watching, but it's so much fun.

I usually thru 'em back complaining loud enough to be heard about all the "trash" fish. LOL:)
