The Harvest Has Begun

For Crappie. Low yield though on the first day with the crappie combine. Caught 3 crappie and 2 white perch. Did lose a Hoss at the boat though. Looked like 13 or 14 inches. Jig just popped out. Bite was slow but had fun. Oh yeah, caught(errr....almost caught) the Hoss off a brushpile. Thats where they are heading now. Brush in 6 to 8 feet of water in my neck of the woods. Ready to go again. Bet you were glad to get out. Hey thanks for the feedback on the post about pesticides. That was more thorough and understandable than the nations most educated in that field could present it. You also obviously know your
#%&*!. :) My guess is that you know more than most of our so called
professionals that are in gov't positions to specificly have that kind of info for those who need it.

I have a real beef with ineptitude and inadequacy in positions that are there to guide and be a resource to the masses. I was registering some of my garden stuff at the co. fair recently and a county extension worker asked a lady what is this? The lady had a jar of pickled okra. If you work for the co ext agency & don't know what the heck okra looks like you shouldn't be wasting taxpayer money. Please go back to 2nd grade and pass the course where you are shown the pictoral flash cards and name the fruit or vegetable.:mad: :mad:
Atleast our local extension agent knows her stuff, she does the office proud plus good-lookin and pleasant lady. I e-mail her once or twice a month with a
question always about my marijuana-what to do about ants attracted to the resin dripping from the buds, why do the leaves curl up when I hang em to dry, etc..........:D She said she cannot answer those questions as a representative of the Great Commonwealth and Va Tech but strictly off the record had I posed these questions during her college days she woulda been glad to come out to the field and take a toke, er, look around.:D

My mom used to make pickled okra to die for, the only way to obtain a jar was to marry into the family. My buddy, about ten at the time, was helping with the canning once, his task was to split peppers and save the seeds for the next years crop. These peppers came from the Seminole side of the family and noboby knows how far back they go. He was working outside on the picnic table. He made the mistake of wiping some sweat from his eye, it took two of us to hold him down whole a third washed his eye with a garden hose. I have the table in my yard now. He is now fifty-six, his eyes water and his hands shake everytime he goes near it.

Man funny you say that- just yesterday I was telling a client about in the early 80s in Phoenix I had a buddy, Mike. I lived several hrs away but would spend alot of time hotel/motel shoeing horses for wks at a time at dude ranches/riding stables. Bout once a yr Mike & I would set aside a whole day and make up a batch of "Industrial Strength" (salsa). Standard procedure was an early trip to the grocer for tomatoes, onions, garlic, peppers, cilantro, limes, etc.....Atleast 2 cases of beer and various other goodies were put at hand. We'd get 2 cutting boards out, sit at the table just a choppin, slicin, drinkin, smokin, & trying to work our way to the bottom of the BS pile. I was the jalapeno & habanero chopper and ya know, slurpin beer like we was it was a constant run to the bathroom & back. I did what yur buddy did but wasn't my eyes I touched. :eek: Man Boscoe the heat flared up and went straight to raging inferno. I shucked & jumped in the shower. Soapy one. Warm one. Cold one. I am in some kind of serious pain thinkin I believe I will have to go to the ER. Mike is half aware of the gravity of the situation but we had washed enuf peace pipes down with cold beer by this time that he wasnt going to let the humor escape him. He is in hysterics diggin thru his ol ladys' stuff. I have never smeared so much different goop on my pkg before or since. Mike has broken out the Wild Turkey for a special occasion and is staggering around trying to take pics of my wienie packed in Noxema.:mad:
Thank God Anne was at work, he had a 10 lb bag of ice in the freezer and I curled up on the sofa hugging that baby & about 2-1/2 hrs worth and I was
not well but could function & stand it. You are right about never gettin near a pepper without an alarm going off since.

Never in the course of mankinds history has a penile projectile been so bruised, raw, blistered, & banged up without having had bigtime fun getting that way as what happened that day.:p

Hey Boscoe, any of them seeds still around?

I think my nephew out in South Hill is still growing some, I will ask him.

Glad I could help out. I am good friends with a couple of Entomologist from N.C. State University and have learned my poisons. They know the weed doctor for the school and can get info through them if I need to. One of them just got rid of the BT refuge program for cotton. This was a set aside field of cotton that did not have the BT gene. It had to be 20 percent of total acres you had that you could spray or 5 percent that you could not spray. This was supposed to keep insects from getting resistant to the BT gene. This was being policed by Monsanto and would come out and take leaf samples. If you were caught with no refuge then you were warned then the next infraction would be at least a ban on your purchasing BT cotton. He finally got it through the thick skulls at EPA that Most of these worms in cotton also had enough hosts other than cotton that we did not need a refuge. He has been on this campaign for years. Also good friends with the Peanut specialist at NCSU. Have learned alot from them that your average extention agent doesn't know. Or know something coming down the pipe that they don't know about for a year or two. They have been great help. Our extension agent is pretty knowledgable. He went to school under one of my Entomologist buddies. His problem seems to be that He thinks he knows everything about everything even when you know he doesn't. Good guy though. CF
