Dragontail FoxFIRE ZX 280 Tenkara
I spent a couple hours trying out my newest Tenkara rod this morning , a Dragontail FoxFire ZX280 .
It’s a Zoom rod , which means it can be fished at three different lengths . 6’6” in the shortest , 8’ in the middle , and 9’3” fully extended.
I spent most of my morning in the shortest and medium lengths . I found it more controllable and accurate in those positions. The extended length was ok if I needed to get a little more distance and felt ok , just not as comfortable as the other two positions. It didn’t feel heavy as I read one review . A longer rod is going to feel different, extending a rod changes the balance.
It weighs just under 2.8ozs . Not a lightweight, but no too heavy either .
After all the lower four sections are made from S Glass fiberglass which is heavier than graphite, and is a slower action .
I started out fishing a 7’8” custom floating level leader made from the running portion of a one weight fly line and a tapered 7-7 1/2’ tippet
The last half hour I shortened my tippet down to about five feet and my hookup ratio got better .
I caught 23 total including one redbreast , two warmouths , ten green sunfish , and the rest were small bluegills. All caught on spider flies .
I like the rod . I like how it bends about 2/3rds when you get a fish on . Can’t wait to get hold a good size gill and see the bend :) .
You know , with me , it’s all about the bend :)
