I'm Grandpa to 2 beautiful grandsons. just toddlers today. After Family, my passion is Crappie fishing. Can't wait to plant the seed. Question is can I successfully build custom rods for "the Men". Want to leave them with treasures. What length rod would you suggest. Want to love of crappie fishing engrained, and loving memories of Grandpa, every time they hit the water

I see no reason why not. A rod that works well today should work equally well in the future.

As far as rod length goes, 4 1/2' or 5' would be good to start with, and as they get older, it can be used dock shooting...just sayin'

This is where everyone posts a different opinion because we all fish just a bit different. It depends on how young you want to put it in their hands and if you fish from a boat or the bank. That said, I use rods from 5’ to 7’ and all spinning. A medium light or light action does a wide range of duties and will pitch most crappie jigs well with 4 or 6 lb line. I use 4 mostly but they might want to chase other species with the rod you built for them. I have a 6’ Shakespeare medium action rod that would do fine for most everything and it’s a softer action medium. Buying a medium action blank from a website is a crapshoot as there are no standards between manufacturers. Look into mudhole.com and begin to educate yourself, they’re a wealth of info and carry most everything. Good luck and holler if you need help.

These are a couple of rods I’ve built I will one day hand down. A 4wt Fenwick fly rod in the back and a 6’6” light medium action spinner in the front. Doesn’t take anything but time to make them special as all the skills are easy to learn and apply.

I think a 7’ medium light might be good rod. Like Skeetbum said could be used multiple species. As for me passing something down it’s gonna have to be jigs and jig tying materials cause I already have jumped deep in that hole.
