1996 50hp Johnson
Looking for a good video or something to follow, gain some tips from, etc. Im not mechanically "declined", but just unfamiliar with outboard motor stuff, and haven't really had to do much with the ones I have had.....lucky, I guess. Sure, last year I replaced the water pump on the Mercury Optimax I have on my bass boat, but that wasn't terrible.
I bought a pontoon last year, and just want to make sure it is ready for when I need it, and have a couple days in this next week to dedicate to it. When I drained the lower unit oil when I winterized it, it is evident that I needed a new lower unit seal replaced. So, I have the proper seal kit, and thought it might be adventagous to go ahead and replace the impeller, too.....as I don't know when the last time that was done. So, I have that ready to do, too.
So, back to my original question.....any tips, videos that I can't seem to find, hints, diagrams, etc that would deem helpful? It is a 1996 50hp Johnson....
Thanks in advance!

Don’t know anything from experience on that particular motor but, I usually go to iboats.net and pull up the parts diagrams on anything new I’m working on. Find the lower unit. That will usually give you a pretty good idea of how things come apart and go back together. Make sure before removing old seal to check its depth in housing, that way you know how deep to install new one. Only concern I’d have and don’t have the answer is the shift linkage. How does it attach? What position to put shifter in.

Hopefully this will give you a general idea even though it’s on a 88 model.

Shifter shaft seal is another that gets weak and needs replaced sometimes, my 150 sat for a while and leaked. A good shop can do a pressure test on it and eliminate the guess work.
