Wylie 3-15-22

Made a short trip today since we got a late start due to unloading about 39,000 baby turkeys. Fished Beaver dam & torrence. Marked a lot of stuff but not many bites. Water looks more stained than it did yesterday. Trolled long lines & drop shot rigs tipped with minnows. Ended up with 12 crappie & 6 perch. Tried several jig colors but never found the right one. Probally, caught more on the drop shot rigs close to the bottom.

dumb question but do you drop shot while you are long line trolling..how does that work?

We usually run 3 rods out the front left (4', 8' & 12' rods) & front right side of the boat. 4 are long lines & 2(4' rods) are drop shot rigs dragging the bottom or close to bottom. Out the back, we run 6 more rods (6', 8' rods). 2 are drop shot rigs & 4 are long lines. The drop shot rigs have a 5/8 oz weight at the bottom of the rig. Usually, speed is .5 to .8. If we get much faster the drop shot rigs just ride up some. But, that's good because fish are at different depths.

Sometimes, all the fish want is a hook & a minnow. We run a mixture of jigs & just hooks with minnows. Often, the Jigs are tipped with minnows too. Jigs are 1/16 oz & 1/8 oz. If the fish are showing deep just add small split shots or slow down some.

This spacing also helps from getting the lines tangled up.

I'm a long line troller but have never tried drop shotting..based on your results. I have to try it

Do you get hung up a lot bumping bottom with the drop shots? I guess you could use heavy enough line to just straighten the gold hooks or pull the drop shot weights off if snagged. Maybe 12 pound test or so? I love the idea of adding those to my long line spread.

Sometimes that's the problem. It's usually not too often. We just use 6 lb line & break it off when it hangs ups. The benefit is catching some of the fish the jigs up in the water column miss. Here lately, about half of the crappie we catch are on the drop shot rigs. When the water warms up some more, the long lines will catch most of the fish.
