10'+ Rods for Truman Tailrace

I fish Truman Tailrace at least once or twice a year. I like using the longer rods (10+) to be able to get a long cast and also to help keep the fish out of the rocks closer to shore. I have had a 12' B'n'M rod/spinning reel for the past 20+ years that has served me well. Caught many crappie, hybrids, and few walleye during that time on it.

I am looking to upgrade to a newer rod within that same length range for crappie. I will mostly use 6 lb. test on a spinning reel for the rod. I would want it to have decent castability for 1/16 - 1/4 ounce lures.

Anyone have any good info on current rods that would suit my needs? Or know what others are using down there these days?

I am also looking to replace another rod 14' surf cast rod of mine I use for Hybrids and Walleye. Looking for long length and good castability. Been thinking about steelhead rods for this. I use anywhere from 1/4 - 2 oz jigs, lead spoons, or topwater baits when targeting hybrids.

Anyone have any good advice on a newer rod for this application also or what others have been using?

Any leads/advice on rods would be appreciated.

I've fished Huckabee, ACC Crappie Stix, BnM, Shakespeare and BPS rods. If you can't make it to a store to purchase a rod, you might be disappointed with anything we suggest. With that said I'll list the rods I use and what "I" like about them or don't like about them.

1. Huckabee - AWESOME rod, great action and backbone to huck a fish into the boat - just too heavy for my bad shoulder
2. ACC Crappie Stix 13' - GS13M w/Cork Handle: I absolutely love this rod! Great action and backbone, not too heavy that I can't fish 9 hours without complaining
3. Shakespeare Crappie Hunter: Very light rod, with crazy action, but lacks some backbone. It gets the job done and they are inexpensive - delicate rod
4. 7' Bass Pro Crappie Rod: I have 2 of these and I love everything about them. I typically don't use them now that I have the 13' ACC, but they are great around docks.
5. BnM Jig Pole and Sam Heaton Editions: I used these in 12' for spider rigging and the SH for jigging trees. Both great rods, but the SH was just a little on the heavy side for my bad shoulder

Honestly, the only way you'll find a rod you like, you need to go to the store and hold it in your hand. Heck bring your reel with you too. Nothing beats that tactile feel to help with your decision.

Perfect. That is the info I am looking for. You are correct in that I need to see and hold in person, but this post was trying to get some insight so that I can at least know of specific rods to go check out. Thanks for your thorough review.

Tailrace definition is:

• a water channel below a dam or water mill.

In this case it is below Truman dam along the riprap.

If you are fishing there, med action rod 7 - 8' would work. In the slack water I've used all those plus Ozark Tourney and Jenko Slab City in 14' for rigging.

In that case the best poles for the tailrace are Jeff's (Jigfisherx)!

Does Jigfisherx build custom rods? I have seen a lot of his posts in the past but do not recall any for rod building. Or does he have a certain brand/model he prefers to use from the bank along the tailrace riprap. I know he has used Jenko rods before and fishes by boat just below the no boating zone of the tailrace. I mainly fish the no boating zone from the riprap bank up closer to handicap pier. Hence why I am searching for a longer rods for longer casting and keeping fish out of the riprap.
