On a positive note it was in the low 70s the last two day in Southcentral Pa. Boy was that nice! Problem is they are calling for 2 to 5 inches of snow tomorrow, So, lets talk about your favorite bait and lures for crappie fishing or any type of fishing for that matter. It will not be long and most of us will be fishing in our spare time instead of talking about fishing.
I think minnows are a hard bait to beat for crappie fishing. Either a shinner or fathead in the 1 1/2 to 2 inch range seems to be the right size. I enjoy seining my own minnows and catch redfins. These are in the darter family and are very hardy.
I tie a lot of flys and jigs and like to fish 1/8 ounce jigs with white, chartrause, or nickle heads. I add white goat hair with some flash married in as well. However a calf tail works very well if goat hair is not available.
I also use the gulp minnows. Most crappie seem to hold on to them for a few seconds longer then some of the other artificial baits. IMO.
I understand some of the Bobby Garland soft plastic works well. Does anyone have any experience with them?
