The Big One got away :)
I borrowed the wife Rav4 since my truck is still smashed and hit the town pond for about forty five minutes this afternoon.
I took my new St Croix Panfish 5’ ULM paired with a Shimano Nasci 500 with 2# P-line .
In a hurry to get out of the house, I grabbed the wrong tackle bag , my soft plastics bag instead of my hand tied jigs and flies .
Luckily, I found a small box of hand ties in the bag that had a couple of my spider ties in there.
I rigged up a tandem rig , with a 1/64 jighead with a green/black Trout Magnet on bottom and a spider fly about 10” above it .
I fished this combo with a small float for about 15-20 minutes without a take .
Took the float off and fish the combo , twitching it across the bottom.
On My third cast , I felt the thump , raised the rod , and it was on . The fish made several runs, even pulling drag a little and then just came unhooked .
Man was I disappointed.
Took awhile to get my next hookup , although I had a couple of light thumps that didn’t produce .
Ended up with this little fellow before I had to get back home . Pretty colors .
Felt good to get out again .
I’m still paranoid driving. It’ll take awhile to get over my wreck last week .

Going tomorrow can't hardly wait.

Great write up, gill, and thanks for the ride along. We have a couple of 70 degree days coming and I’m going to get out win or lose an d wet a line.

Thanks for sharing the outing. I can relate to your paranoia. I had a kid hit me totaling my truck years ago. It took some time for that edginess to pass.

Still caught something you did, I tamed some nice big boys this afternoon and they didn’t get away, at least until they posed for a picture :biggrin

Nice fish. You’re ready to get out some and I can’t blame ya. Good luck with the truck saga.

That is what keeps us going back for more

Figured I just tag onto this post , since it happened to me again today.
This time I got the thick gill up to the edge of the bank , and the hook pulled out .
This was a nice one , it actually came out of the water twice when I raised the rod to set the hook . Seeing a bluegill dance on top is something you don’t see everyday .
I had two others that came unhooked on me after fighting them about halfway in.
I don’t understand what’s going on. I’m using some new spiders I recently tied up on Daiichi hooks . I had better hookups with the cheap Eagle Claw hooks .
I fished an hour and twenty minutes and brought four to hand including a small LM bass that was fun on my five foot St Croix Premier ULM rod teamed up with a Shimano Nasci 500 , filled with SOS 2# .
I was fishing a drop shot rig .
I included the bass pic because it had the rod/reel used in it .
It was fun getting out even for a short trip .

Looks like fun. I have no good words on the missed hook ups. I haven't used hooks for gills in several years, jigs only. In my experience, once I've hooked a gill, it doesn't come off. Crappies, yes. Gills, no.

Great follow up report, gill. Looks like a real pretty setting to fish.
