I received a new Iprimi 56XXUL from Chris Stewart last Friday and finally got the chance to check it out. The rod arrived quickly, well packaged, and Chris even took the time to mark which end of the box to remove the contents from. Nice touch.
At first glance, I was a little concerned the rod might be too whippy, but after the first cast with a 1.2 gram spool, that concern was put to rest. It cast like a dream! I paired it with a 500 Piscifun reel and 2.5 test line. The first 3 casts were met with strikes, but no hookup. Cast number 4 was a charm and ended up with a nice Rainbow. The rod was a lot of fun to fish with. Obviously, it’s not as sensitive as a faster rod, but these 10-13” Trout put a great bend in the rod. Hearing the drag click was an added bonus. I don’t normally keep fish, but in less than 20 minutes, I had my 4 fish limit. Found out from the friendly Ranger that after #4 was put in the bucket, I had to stop for the day. Oh well….
Went back yesterday and fished for a couple of hours and tossed everything back. I didn’t bother to count, but landed a bunch and had several long line releases. I did experiment with several lures, down to a 1/32 ounce Daredevel, and yellow seemed to be the preferred color. I found it interesting to see the rod tip twitch long before I felt the take. The first couple of times I wasn’t sure what I was seeing, but that was what was happening. All in all, a big thumbs up and 2 fun outings!
