I thought air/oxygen is part of the reaction on the commercial ones. That is the the reason for the clothlike packaging. I can remember using them if they cooled down you could take them out of your pockets and get some air to them and they would heat up.

I bet that's what I'm missing. Yeah, the plastic bag must not let any oxygen get through.
I would think that might be the reason they got slighty warm. They had ran out of oxygen to fuel the reation
For what it’s worth, when I use the commercial warmers, and they’ve still got “life” left when I’m through with them, I seal them in a plastic bag. When I remove them days later and give ‘em a few shakes, they heat back up.
Will definitely have to try that.
The oxidation or iron is an amazing thing. That is how you cut steel with a touch. Get the metal hot enough to react with the stream of oxygen you can turn off the gas and the reaction produces enough heat to keep it cutting.
