Winter, hand tied ,town pond ,gills
Got a chance to sneak off to our town pond after lunch today to try out a couple of rods and try out some new hand tied jigs .
Weather was overcast and 65 degrees when I got home . My phone weather kept telling me it was 58 , but I had to come out of my Crappie.com hoodie . I knew it was warmer .
Fishing was slow as expected, but I managed to fool six gills and got five of them in hand. Actually one was a small shellcracker.
I think the one that came unhooked while bringing it in fought like a nice shellcracker, pulling drag a couple of times before the line went limp .
I actually only fished one jig , a woolybooger jig clone in 1/64oz . It’s my favorite because it usually works .
With my 5’4” St Croix panfish rod and my 5’6” Trout series , with SOS 2# line I was able to get 50-60 feet cast .
I caught a nice bluegill on TS rod , then switched to the Panfish rod to finish out the day . The last two gills I caught using a small weighted float about 20” above the jig with a slow retrieve.
