12 Foot Spinning Rod

I want to start this post by thanking all of those folks here who have given me advice on my past beginner builds. I have drank the kool-aid and brothers I believe lol . My first two rods were a huge success in my mind. I now have specialty tools to fish with and what a difference . That brings me to my next subject a 12 foot spinning rod . It will be casting a 1/16 ozjig with a 1 1/4 inch weighted bobber . The objectives are 1) I want it light and balanced 2) casting distance is a must 3) sensitivity I need to feel as much as I can . Just to define these a little bit I am shooting for something thats easy to hold for hours in not feel heavy tipped that I am constantly having to fight to hold up. The castibility comes from being a bank fisherman and I NEED to be able to load this rod up and cast a maximum distance . I have also learned when using a float you can feel bites as much as you see em hence I NEED sensitivity. As far as I know there are no spinning blanks that long so maybe steelhead blanks or fly rod blanks ? I know nothing about either so I am coming here to pick the brains of more experienced builders . Have any of you made a rod for the purpose I am describing? Any suggestions for a blank and guides ? Any thoughts would be appreciated thanks .

This will be an interesting build

If you’re set on building a rod, more power to ya. However, English float rods are designed for what you want to do. Standard float rods over there are 12-13’. I have several of them, and they’re excellent.

If it were me, I’d buy one.

Why hold the rod at all?

I have six, from 12-14’.

Thanks for the replies . I will look into English Float Rods. Not sure what was meant by not holding the rod , I have to in order to hook a crappie bite .

I meant that I never hold the rod. I stick the butt in between my legs (while seated.) I keep my hand on the butt of the rod so I can set the hook, but my hand does not “support” the rod. Therefore, rod weight has never been an issue.

I have no experience with these but I am paying attention. My thought on being tip heavy is the right blank and the right reel to make it balance. Don’t think you’ll be holding the reel in hand as you would with a shorter rod but likely that the balance point will be part way up the blank. Which brings to mind the thought of a touch spot where the balance point is. My Sam Heaton was my first like that and it worked very well for me.

This is just one example. Twelve foot float rods in Europe are like six foot spinning rods in the US: there’s a million of them. This video also shows how they are not held while fishing.
