Fall Fishing, a New Line, and a Nice Surprise
Made a rare Fall trip to the big pond on Friday in the boat. Usually in a tree stand this time of year, I ventured out to try a new line that has been getting good reviews on this website lately.

The Blue Moon Fluorocarbon by Varivas is a new line for me and has been both Slab and Trout Magnet Man approved. Spooled on a Daiwa Luvias 1003 I set out to find some deep Fall bluegill.

It didn’t take long to find them on the Electronics, stacked up they were.

In the Fall you never know what you might tangle with as many fish are moving and feeding up for the coming winter.

Ick, this big school of fish contained some slimy old whisker fish that were hungry, pass on them I will.

The next few fish were more of what I was after, nothing big but still fun. The new line was not as I expected, poor casting distance and line rod slap issues. I put the rod in the box after several casts and decided to investigate the reason for the poor performance later. So when I got home I realized I missed the third guide eye when I strung it up and that was causing the issues. Ok so let’s try this again. Varivas makes a quality product I am certain of that much, and when properly outfitted on good equipment I would expect a quality performance. So today I strung the line up properly and took off to the lake for an afternoon bank trip.

Much better, after a few casts I stuck my first victim. Gills cannot resist buggy looking lures and their peck peck was felt easily through the fluorocarbon line.

They are such a pretty fish. Several small ones fell victim to the creek bugs, no more line issues were had the remainder of the evening.

I also caught several small bass and when I landed this one I noticed the stick in front of me looked like a rod….

By George it was a baitcast rod and reel that had been lost this year. I wiped it off a little bit and upon investigation it was a Lews reel with a Cashion Rod. It still had a Texas rigged bait on it and it even casted. Big mistake there on my part as I was showered with lake water and dirty moss from the spool, but it worked. It will be cleaned up and given away most likely. Again, not really a Fall fisherman but the second trip out with the new fluorocarbon was fun, I look forward to using this line more in the future. Enjoy.
