UL rod for vertical jigging suggestions

I’ve been using 36” ice rods to vertical jig with sonar (video game fishing) from a kayak. I’m looking for something that is light weight, and with the same sensitivity, but in the 5-6.5’ range in length. I would still primarily be vertical jigging with the rod, but I want something that will also allow me to sharpshoot crappie that appear on the sonar 20-30’ in front of me. I’ve been looking hard at the Major Craft Speedstyle S63 UL/SFS. The ice rods have a solid carbon tip, and I thinking that rod would be a good match for my style of fishing. But, I want to make sure there are not better options in the $2-300 price range before making a purchase.

I owned that rod….now my son has it. You probably know this but I’ll run it by you anyway. While the rod is rated UL…it is a bass UL. Much different animal that the Light Game UL rods. It will certainly do what you want to do very well…it is a very sensitive rod. I think there are probably better rods out there for your budget. While I’m sure there are places you can acquire that rod it is out of production. How much fun factor are you looking for?

I’m not familiar with the JDM UL tackle. UL bass rod sounds about right for my application. I use 5-7mm ice jigs & 1” gulp minnows on 3lb line. Looking at the specs of other rods, most seem to be 3lbs max…..and seem a little too UL for my application. I’m looking for a “feel” rod as my eyes are fixed on the sonar, and a touch more power tends to equate to a little more feel in my experience. The Major Craft rod seems to get good reviews, but is an older model. Just looking at other options that might be better for what I want it to do.

Not familiar with any other JDM UL bass rods. The SpeedStyle will certainly do the job and do it well. The only reason I got rid of the rod was because it did not make for a lot of fun fishing for bluegill. The UL lineup of Major Craft bass rods are very good. I used to own a couple of Volkey's and some MS-X rods...all of them excellent for what you are wanting to do. The SpeedStyle replaced the Volkey and I have to say while the Volkey was a great rod...the SpeedStyle is even better.
