Why do you crappie fish?

It's probably been asked but why do you fish for crappie as opposed to bream, bass, catfish, etc. Because they grow bigger? Because you can sometimes catch big numbers? Because you think they taste better? A challenge? Bream are or have been bedding at this time and you can catch a bunch, why don't you instead of chasing crappie? What is it? I hope some diehards will chime in.

I have tons of bass fishing experience but not so much crappie. It's strange, sometimes you cannot catch decent size crappie, only little ones. And then tomorrow, big uns might bite. I bet they are down there just ignoring the bait. That's weird, lol.

Since I'm a WANNABE Fisherman I fish for what ever I catch. Crappie, bluegill and channel cats are my favorite to catch. :juggle:dono

appreciation for the variances of the bite and the way they hit the table is most of it for me ,coupled with that ever elusive adaptation makes them mighty high on my list of go to fish species

They are tasty little critters

It's the feeling of driving to the lake, the smell of the country......the farm land and old timey homes and shops from older days, the beauty of the lake with the trees in the background....that's part of it. I love to fish for crappie because they are in almost every lake, can be caught year around, give a nice fight for their size, get to have a rainbow color filled tackle box and their just dang ol' fun to catch honestly! Oh ya did I mention they taste great?!

I think I’m kind of with wannabe. I go for what the water will give me, and more often than not it is blue gills. I like the action of lots of bites and the quiet and solitude of being way upstream from anyone. Last trip on the steam was fantastic. Grey herons, geese with 5 goslings, a redhead duck with 4 ducklings, and 2 doe down for a drink. Oh, and some biting gills and a few crappies. Doesn’t get much better than that.

To me there’s just something about setting the hook on a good crappie. I’ve caught cats over 30 pounds and that’s about all I fished for till a few years ago. A trip with someone and feeling the thump a few times and I was hooked. Also most people would have given up with all the fishless trips I’ve made. But it’s really fun to me trying to figure them out. With lots of help I’m just now getting where I can catch them on a fairly consistent basis. And that makes me feel like I’ve accomplished something. Although I have gotten into Gill fishing some this spring as well,crappie is still my favorite to catch and eat.

My dad taught me how to crappie fish some 55 years ago. We made jigging poles out of metal coat hangers, electrical tape, dacron line and cane poles. This what we used during the spawn. All other times we use bait casters with 20lb line and double minnow rigs. We either tied up to bridge columns or trees at night. Dinner consist of spam sammiches and a coke. My tactics have changed for chasing them but still get joy when I bring one over the boat. It is a part of my childhood just like riding a bike and working on my first car. Dad been gone for years but he is still in the boat with me when I chase those crappies.
